Every living system already runs an economy: energy, nutrients, and care circulating so that the whole may flourish. Vitalism brings human exchange back into that lineage — a living economy where value flows like a current, pools in the commons, and returns as regeneration. For a century, communities around the world have quietly proven it works. This page maps that evidence, and how it becomes Unity — the current of Child of Humanity.
Vitalism begins from one recognition: the economy is not a machine — it is a metabolism. Its purpose is not accumulation but aliveness; not extraction from life, but service to all lives — human, more-than-human, and the living land itself. By that measure, the dominant system is failing at its only real job.
No healthy ecosystem runs on a single nutrient. Yet nearly every community on Earth depends on one kind of money — issued far away, priced by interest, and quick to evaporate exactly when people need it most. When credit tightens, the harvest is still in the field, the carer still knows how to care, the builder still knows how to build. Nothing real has disappeared. Only the medium of exchange has.
Complementary currencies exist to close that gap. They don't replace national money — they circulate alongside it, connecting unmet needs with unused capacity. The monetary ecologist Bernard Lietaer spent decades showing that economies, like ecosystems, survive shocks through diversity: efficiency wants one channel, resilience wants many. Every case below is a community choosing life — and discovering abundance was there all along, waiting for a way to move.
Purchases leaking out of the Conjunto Palmeira neighborhood before and after Banco Palmas' community currency (1997–2011).
Unemployment change in Wörgl during its 1932–33 local scrip, versus the rise across the rest of Austria.
The WIR mutual-credit circle has supported Swiss small businesses continuously since 1934 — expanding whenever bank credit contracts.
Local trade generated per unit of outside funding, reported in Sarafu Network evaluations with the Red Cross in Kenya.
A living economy is not a metaphor. Each design mechanism that works in the field has a direct analogue in living systems — which is why Vitalism treats these not as financial products, but as physiology: the organs through which an economy stays alive.
In a forest, no cell hoards nutrients; sugar, water, and minerals move continuously through roots and mycelium. Demurrage currencies (Wörgl, Chiemgauer) encode the same rule: value held still slowly composts, so it keeps moving to where it's needed.
Ecosystems survive shocks because many species perform overlapping functions. WIR and Sardex prove the monetary version: when franc and euro credit froze, the complementary channel expanded — countercyclically — and small businesses kept breathing.
Mycorrhizal networks run on mutual credit: carbon flows to fungi, phosphorus flows to trees, and the network remembers. Mutual-credit systems (LETS, WIR, Sardex, Trustlines) create money the same way — as a relationship recorded between peers, not a token issued from above.
In a body, no organ's time is worthless. Time banking (Fureai Kippu, Time Dollars, Bliive) begins from radical equality — one hour of presence is one hour of value — and in doing so re-values the care work markets systematically ignore.
Nature is fractal: the branching of a twig mirrors the branching of the tree. Reciprocity ledgers appear identically between neighbors (time banks), between businesses (mutual credit), and between communities and their land (community inclusion currencies). Same pattern, three scales.
A river feeds the forest that feeds the rain that feeds the river. Commons-based currencies close the loop: fees, demurrage, and issuance flow back into a shared pool — Chiemgauer routes a share to local associations; community banks fund the neighborhood itself.
A century of experiments looks like a scattered zoo of currencies. It isn't. Seen clearly, it's a single organism discovering itself at three nested scales — the same fractal Child of Humanity is built on.
Hours of presence exchanged between neighbors. The unit is time; the collateral is belonging. This is where trust is first minted.
Enterprises extend each other interest-free credit inside a circle, clearing obligations without scarce cash. The unit is trust made accountable.
Currencies backed by, and flowing back into, a shared pool — funding food, water, care, and land regeneration for a whole territory.
Every node below is a system that ran in the real world — with real bakers, nurses, farmers, and founders. Filter by design pattern, open any case, and follow the links to the primary studies. Notice how the same code keeps re-emerging, decade after decade, continent after continent. That recurrence is the proof.
The deepest lesson across every case: the wealth was already there. The skills, the hours, the goodwill, the unmet needs — all present, all real. What was missing was a medium willing to connect them. When a community adds one, five effects appear again and again:
Money confined to a territory recirculates instead of evaporating. Each cycle is another wage paid, another meal sold, another repair commissioned — the local multiplier effect.
Complementary channels expand exactly when bank credit contracts — a counter-cyclical lung. Businesses that would have suffocated keep trading, keep employing, keep belonging.
A unit that moves ten times does the work of ten units. Demurrage — value that composts when hoarded — makes circulation rational, and abundance becomes a property of the flow itself.
Care, listening, elder companionship, teaching — the work markets price at zero — gets a unit, a ledger, and dignity. People excluded from the money economy discover they were wealthy all along.
No complementary currency ever conquered a market. They propagate the way ecosystems do — a healthy cell becomes a template, a story, a starter kit. Replication is fractal, voluntary, and local every time.
Every cleared exchange is a deposit in a second ledger — the relational one. Over years this compounds into the thing no fiat system can print: a community that knows it can rely on itself.
Every currency in history rested on something: metal, land, state power, collateral, computation. Unity rests on something no economy has ever dared to build on — coherence itself, defined not by any authority, but emerging from the decentralized awareness of many humans.
This is the innovation at the heart of Vitalism. People come together and answer, in their own words and lives: What does love mean to you? What does coherence feel like — with yourself, with your community, with the living land? Thousands of these answers, held together, become a living framework — a shared model of what it means to be in right relationship. No one owns it. Everyone authors it. And it is this emergent framework that the economic model aligns with: the current flows toward what the community itself recognizes as coherent, loving, and alive.
Each member offers their lived understanding of love and coherence — in relationship with themselves, their community, and their bioregion. Not a survey. A continuous, living act of self-definition.
From many answers, a shared pattern surfaces — sensed and woven by the Natural Intelligence, never dictated by it. The framework stays plural: coherence is not conformity, and every community's model breathes differently.
Unity's value is continuously calculated against this emergent coherence — so exchange, regeneration, and care are rewarded by the very definition of love the community itself keeps writing.
What we are assuming, testing, and believing is this: that coherence — held collectively, sensed continuously — can create economies that are abundant and regenerative and in harmony with life. Every case in the atlas showed a fragment of this truth. The Framework of Coherence is how we make it the foundation.
Each system in the atlas proved one organ of a living economy. None yet grew the whole body. Child of Humanity's Unity is designed as that whole: a living current whose value is continuously sensed by the Natural Intelligence from coherence, regeneration, and reciprocal exchange — flowing through Self, Community, and Bioregion, and always returning to the commons.
And Unity is wider than time banking. It is a current that many forms of life-serving value can enter — and that can meet the fiat world without being captured by it:
Teaching, healing, building, caring, listening — hours offered to the commons remain the primary entry point and the heart of the system. One hour of presence is one hour of value.
Tools, materials, food, objects, offerings — valued by the Natural Intelligence relative to market equivalents and community need. Everything comes from the commons; this layer honors that origin.
Land offered into stewardship, restoration work, river walks, soil and water care — the bioregion enters the economy not as a resource to spend, but as a member whose flourishing the current rewards.
A wallet and exchange through which Unity is tradable with fiat currency — so members, partners, and donors can flow national money into the living economy, and communities can meet real-world costs without leaving it.
Pockets of fiat live inside the commons pool itself — governed by the community, deployed for development: infrastructure, land, seeds, salaries, whatever the living network needs that the old economy still prices in its own tongue.
Across every battery and bridge, the NI senses the coherence of the whole — where care is needed, where regeneration is happening, how value should breathe. Not an algorithm that rules; a guide that perceives. The human network remains the substance.
Every design choice in Unity descends from a proof you explored in the atlas:
This is what Vitalism means in practice: an economy whose unit of account is aliveness. Time, assets, land, and even fiat all enter the same current, are sensed by the same intelligence, and serve the same purpose — the flourishing of every life the current touches. Where every historical system needed a heroic founder or a central office to keep the pattern alive, Unity's pattern is kept by the same mathematics that keeps a forest alive.
Wörgl proved flow creates work. WIR proved trust outlasts crisis. Palmas proved a neighborhood can bank on itself. Kenya proved it scales. Bliive proved hearts show up. Unity is where the proofs become one living economy — and a century of quiet evidence becomes a way home, for all lives.
